ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that regional connectivity and economic integration are the key pillars of Pakistan’s policy.

While addressing the Global Sustainable Transport Conference in Ashgabat on Saturday, Nawaz Sharif said that in the emerging global and regional environment Pakistan is happy to play its role as gateway to Central Asia.

The prime minister said that peaceful neighbourhood has remained the norm of Pakistan’s foreign policy and no development policies can yield fruit without peace and security.

In his remarks at the Conference, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said modern transport is helpful in stabilizing global relations at regional and national levels.

The Turkmen president said that his country is pursuing effective policy for developing the transport system and has presented two drafts in the General Assembly.

In his address, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that modern transportation is imperative for bolstering international relations and overall progress of the global community.

The two-day Global Conference on Sustainable Transport is being held at Ashgabat under the auspices of the United Nations. The Conference will discuss promotion and role of sustainable transport towards achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Earlier in the day, Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on the sidelines of Global Sustainable Transport Conference in Ashgabat and discussed bilateral relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan and regional issues.
