Petrol shortage was a serious failure on part of OGRA: Nawaz told

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif presided over a meeting to review the petrol supplies situation in Islamabad on Tuesday, during which he was informed that petrol shortage was a serious failure on the part of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) as a regulator.

   

During the meeting, a two-member committee established on Monday by the primer to probe into petrol crisis presented its preliminary report to Nawaz Sharif.

On the occasion, the prime minister directed the concerned authorities to take measures to avert recurrence of petrol shortage like situation.

The meeting endorsed the earlier decision of suspending four senior officials responsible for the crisis and decided that the Deputy Managing Director of Pakistan State Oil (PSO) Sohail Butt was also equally responsible and ordered his suspension as well.

On Saturday, the prime minister suspended four officers including the Secretary Petroleum Abid Saeed, the Additional Secretary Petroleum Naeem Malik, the Director General Oil M Azam and the Managing Director PSO Dr Amjad Janjua for current petrol crisis.

Demand and supply situation of petrol improving

Meanwhile according to sources, the demand and supply situation of the petroleum products is improving gradually and hopefully the crisis will be overcome shortly.

The Petroleum Dealers Association said that 5.7 million litre petrol has been supplied to the petrol pumps during the last three days and over 1.8 million litre petrol will be provided to the pumps by tonight which will help further improve the situation.

The association said that the staff of the petrol pumps has been directed to supply diesel and petrol to the consumers according to their demand. It said that to stop misuse of petroleum products the supply of petrol in bottles and other containers has been banned.
