ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has reduced the electricity tariff by Rs 0.47 per unit, a decision welcomed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The authority’s decision to cut down the electricity tariff by Rs 0.47 per unit was based on the details submitted by the ministry of water and power on account of monthly fuel price adjustment for the month of October 2014, says a reported published by Radio Pakistan.

On the directions of the prime minister, the ministry of water and power had submitted details of fuel mix for slashing the tariff for the consumers and is following strict merit order for ensuring efficient fuel mix for lowering down the cost of electricity generation.

The government is also making concerted efforts to change the energy mix from thermal to other affordable sources including coal and hydro generation to bring down the cost of electricity production.

The prime minister said that practical step taken by the government are showing results and its benefits are cascading to the masses.

Sharif expressed the hope that further reduction in the oil prices next month will bring considerable solace to the masses at large.

The government is committed to provide this relief in the coming months as well, he resolved.

The prime minister further observed that the provincial government must also take practical step to ensure relief to the public in lieu of continuing decline in the oil prices in the country.
