Nawaz Sharif calls for realizing Pak-Iran trade potential

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that too much potential exists for enhancing trade between Pakistan and Iran.

   

“Pakistan desires to have strong relations with Iran in diverse areas including trade and economic cooperation,” the prime minister said while talking to media representatives in Islamabad.

The prime minister said that Pakistan has been enjoying cordial and close relations with Iran since its creation.

Sharif said that his endeavor is to bring the two countries further closer to each other.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, Pakistan and Iran signed five memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to boost cooperation in diverse sectors at the conclusion of 19th session of Pakistan-Iran Joint Economic Commission (JEC).

Under the agreements, both the countries would cooperate in the field of investment, economic and technical assistance, small and medium enterprises, ports and handicrafts.

The Iranian Minister for Economic Affairs and Finance Dr Ali Tayyebnia, who was in Pakistan to attend the JEC also called on the prime minister in Islamabad on Tuesday, and held a discussion focusing on Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations with particular reference to the economic dimension.

During the meeting, both the prime minister and the Iranian minister underscored the importance attached to deeper bilateral relations for increased trade and economic cooperation.

Both sides agreed to increase mutual investment and bilateral trade between the two countries.
