Over 1,900 schools across Punjab damaged due to rains & floods

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: More than 1,900 schools across Punjab have been damaged and remained non-operational due to the unprecedented rains and floods, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said.

   

The NDMA said that Punjab has been the worst-hit province due to rains and floods where more than 1.7 million of the population is affected. It said that nearly 17,000 houses have been fully destroyed in the province.

On Tuesday, on the directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the NDMA in collaboration with humanitarian partners initiated process of Multi Sector Initial Rapid Assessment (MIRA) to assess the damages in the districts of Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Jhang and Multan.

Shahbaz orders early completion of assessment of flood damages

The Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has ordered establishment of a technical committee to oversee restoration of infrastructure in the flood-hit areas.

In his address at a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Floods in Lahore, he said that work of repair and restoration of infrastructure in flood hit areas should be carried out on emergency basis.

The chief minister asked the departments concerned to immediately complete assessment of the losses so that the process of restoration should be started without any delay.
